I believe a good base is about having three good pairs of jeans in your closet - boyfriend jeans, skinny jeans and flared jeans - one for every occasion. My latest favorite is this slightly oversized cropped one by Current/Elliott. For casual weekend wear I am teaming it with a denim shirt and a pair of espadrilles, switching to pointy flats and kitten heels at night.
